Requirements

Schools in China are recruiting English teachers from overseas every year. As a foreigner teaching in China, you are considered to be a foreign expert by Chinese government. However, to be qualified as a foreign expert, you must meet with the following requirements:.

1. Entry
China issues two kinds of visas for foreign experts:
- Visa F for those who are invited to teach in China for short-term (less than 6 months)
- Visa Z for those who work for long-term service.

2. Working Visa
According to the regulations, foreign experts who is going to work in China for more than 6 months should apply for visa Z to China's department of foreign affairs or overseas organization entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by presenting their invitation letters, valid passports and certificates, as well as the Foreign Experts Affairs Invitation Confirmation.
The invitation confirmation is a certificate issued by the inviting work unit to State Bureau of Foreign Expert Affairs who agrees and proves that the holder comes to China as an expert and ask the Chinese Embassy or Consulate to issue the visa.
The certificate is a proof of their identity when working in China and to apply for residence permits. To apply, you must present the introduction letter from the work unit, the contract between the governments and universities, the visa Z and two photos. This certificate is valid for one year only and it has to be renewed when expired.

3. Custom Regulations (bring in and take out daily necessities)
For long-term service foreign experts: books, newspapers, teaching notes, visual aids, samples, models and photographic slides, small instruments and special materials needed in research, teaching, experiments, etc. First time experts with visa valid for one year or more can bring video camera, tape-recorder, CD player, computer.
To entitle to this allowance, they need to apply for foreign expert ID card issued by state Bureau and office of foreign affairs in provinces, region and cities.

4. Foreign Experts ID Card
This card allows the first time foreign experts to bring in a reasonable amount of daily necessities for personal use free of duty. This card is issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs, and by offices of foreign affairs in provinces, regions and cities.

5. Foreign Residence Permit
Foreign experts with visa Z should apply for residence permit to the local police station. To apply, one must present valid passport, visa Z, foreign expert certificate, aliens health record, introduction letter and two photos. When leaving the service place, foreign expert should register for contemporary residence in the target place.
Foreign experts with visa F should also apply for contemporary residence when they need to stay longer in China.

6. Medical Care
The health system in China covers the whole country. China adopts a partly free medical care service. Particular issues should be covered in the contract.
